Free throw attempt rate (FTA Rate)

Free throws come from drawing fouls, and they are worth a lot. Free throw attempt rate shows how often a player or team gets to the line compared with how often they shoot.

The formula

FTA rate = FTA ÷ FGA

NBA.com's formula. A rate of 0.50 means one free throw attempt for every two field goal attempts.

Worked example

Wilt Chamberlain, 2 March 1962

32 free throw attempts, 63 field goal attempts1.

32 ÷ 63 = 0.51

Bam Adebayo, 10 March 2026

43 free throw attempts, 43 field goal attempts2.

43 ÷ 43 = 1.00

Adebayo's 36 made and 43 attempted free throws are both NBA records for one game3.

One game, both teams: 2 March 1962
